Students who pay more for their education may be buying better sex lives, as well.
As the cost of college tuition increases, so do students’ sex drives, according to a study by dating website OkCupid. The study shows a link between tuition costs and the number of times students want to have sex weekly.
OkCupid’s April study shows students who pay more for their college tuition overall want to have more sex than students who pay less.
“Surprisingly yes, I would agree that students who pay more for their tuition want to have more sex,” business marketing sophomore Jennifer McGaughey said. “Based on the number of people that I know that are more sexually active pay more for their tuition.”
The study analyzed 19,873 OkCupid users’ responses and the out-of-state tuition costs of 98 universities for the 2010-2011 school year.
Many university students disagree with the study and say they don’t see how college tuition and the desire to have sex are connected.
“I don’t think that there is any correlation because the extent to which someone wants to have sex is more based on their morals and who they are,” psychology senior Courtney Douglas said. “I don’t see how that could be related to how much they pay for tuition, because if you pay more for tuition I would think you or more likely to be willing to focus of studying and paying more attention to school than to a sexual relationship.”
Students at LSU, on average, want to have sex almost 5 times a week, according to the study.
“I think that LSU students want to have sex four times a week,” McGaughey said. “You know, that sounds like a normal number for college kids.”
Some students say the University’s notorious party atmosphere provides ample opportunity to engage in sexual relationships.
“Despite what the national polls say now, LSU is still a huge party school,” journalism senior Stephen Owens said. “Nobody just wants to sit home and study.”
Ryan LeGuluche, public relations senior, and Taylor Robneth, chemistry senior, agree that students probably want to have sex more than four times a week.
“Who doesn’t want to have sex four times a week?” Robneth said.
LeGuluche said he thinks the local nightlife is one of the main causes for students’ sexual activities.
“I would say it should probably be more than four times a week because of Tigerland,” LeGuluche said.
Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., has tuition rates of $52,000 a year, and the study claims their students there want to have sex the most — as often as six times a week.
“Maybe a sense of entitlement of something could explain the study,” Owens said. “Those students might think they deserve to have more sex.”
But that doesn’t hold water for biology freshman Bianca Chappel.
“I would disagree with the study,” Chappel said. “The majority of students who want to go to college actually come get an education and other things such as sex don’t have any impact on why students come to
