After defeating No. 2 Alabama 9-6 in overtime in what many billed as the “Game of the Century,” LSU’s homecoming game against Western Kentucky probably can’t even claim the title of “Game of the Week.”
No. 1-ranked Tigers enter their first-ever contest against Western Kentucky (5-4,
5-1 Sun Belt) as six-touchdown favorites, having won all of their previous 34 contests against Sun Belt opponents, and against 36 straight non-conference contests.
Entering their match up against Western Kentucky, LSU appears to have a quarterback controversy brewing yet again. Against Alabama, early into his ninth-consecutive start, Jarett Lee threw two interceptions on back to back possessions, causing Coach Les Miles to stick with back-up quarterback Jordan Jefferson for the majority of the game. Miles hasn’t named the starter for Saturday’s game yet.
On the other side of the ball, LSU’s defense shouldn’t have much of a problem against the Hilltoppers, as Western Kentucky ranks 101st out of 120 FBS schools in total offense (331.6 yards per game) and scoring (21.6 points per game).
However, they will have to neutralize senior running back Bobby Rainey, who is third in the FBS in rushing yards this season with 1,169. Rainey broke the century mark in 8 different games this season, including a 155-yard performance last Saturday in Western Kentucky’s 10-9 win over Florida International.
The Tigers look to go 10-0 for the first time since their 1958 Championship season, and likely won’t face much adversity as they reach that goal. I predict LSU to soundly top the Hilltoppers, 41-7.
