In a heated debate on Wednesday, the Student Government Senate passed a resolution in a 37-5-1 vote urging the Chancellor to impose a fee increase to expand the University Recreation Center.
Robert Bostick, senator for the College of Agriculture and co-author of the resolution, said the UREC is the leader in student jobs at the University. With this expansion, he said student jobs at the UREC will double from 200 to 400 jobs.
The expansion would take place in three phases, each estimated to take about one year to complete. In addition, Bostick said access to the facilities would not be compromised during construction.
Senate Speaker Aaron Caffarel said the purpose of this expansion is to serve the current students as well as future students.
