The LSU System Board of Supervisors could lose its authority to award money to the University after the Governance Commission adopted a proposal Tuesday that would create a constitutional amendment to give budgetary authority the Board of Regents.
The constitutional amendment, with the other 21 proposals the board adopted, must be approved by the Louisiana Legislature.
Jason Droddy, director of external affairs, said this constitutional amendment “changes everything” in terms of higher education alignment in the state. Droddy said the board’s argument to gain control over the budget is that it cannot be held accountable for its decisions if its money is shuffled at the lower system level.
“The clear message we received from the legislative authors of the resolution creating this commission is that stronger accountability and efficiency is critical to the future success of postsecondary education, and we certainly concur,” said Governance Commission Chairman Greg Davis in a news release. “These recommendations warrant immediate consideration and action by the Louisiana Legislature and the higher education community in order to better serve our state’s
