The NCAA Division I Board of Directors adopted a proposal Thursday that will provide student athletes with additional economic aid to cover additional school expenses.
The proposal calls for athletes to receive up to $2,000 or the full cost of attendance, whichever amount is less.
The sweeping change comes just days after former LSU chancellor Mark Emmert, now the NCAA president, put his support behind the idea of increasing the monetary compensation within athletic scholarships earlier this week.
The plan also includes a stricter Academic Progress Rate (APR) standard schools must meet to participate in postseason play.
The new eligibility requirements include a 930 APR average to compete in the postseason, beginning in the 2012-13 season, and a 940 average beyond that.
“These changes demonstrate a remarkable resolve by presidents,” Emmert said in a press release. “They represent a return to and a focus on values that are at the core of what intercollegiate athletics are all about. They also represent a clear signal to the world about what we care about and what we stand for.”
