KNIGHT COMMISSION
One part of Martin’s athletic involvement includes his membership in the Knight Commission, a group formed in 1989 by university presidents and chancellors to ensure college athletics programs maintain the educational mission of colleges.
Martin will travel to Washington, D.C., on Oct. 24 for a Knight Commission meeting. The group will discuss the rising costs of athletic programs, recent scandals and lowering academic standards.
“I really hope that we get back to remembering that these are student-athletes, not the other way around,” Martin said. “We have an obligation to them. If we’re going to admit them as students, then we have to make sure they are home.”
Martin said money has taken control of the NCAA and concerns about television contracts have driven the realignment discussion.
“I hope we have the courage not to let that be the only factor, but it is a big factor,” Martin said. “I’d be very disingenuous if I didn’t admit else.”
Martin also stressed every employee of the Athletic Department should have full knowledge of NCAA regulations. The prominence of collegiate athletics has made enforcing the department a challenge, he added.
“I wish we could go back to a different time when it was a little less formal and a little less visible,” Martin said. “But it’s not. So we’re going to try and get the best of it and minimize the
