KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — No. 1 LSU wore down Tennessee and dominated time of possession en route to a 38-7 victory in Neyland Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers possessed the ball for more than 38 minutes and scored touchdowns on all three drives in the second half.
LSU opened the second half with a dominant 12-play, 66-yard drive that resulted in a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Spencer Ware. The Tigers added to their lead on their next possession with a 99-yard drive that took 8 minutes, 44 seconds off the clock. Senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson put the finishing touches on the drive with a three-yard touchdown run.
Junior wide receiver added the Tigers’ third score of the half on a 14-yard touchdown run after a lateral from senior quarterback Jarrett Lee.
LSU took a 17-7 lead into halftime after kicker Drew Alleman nailed a 18-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first half.
The Tigers opened the second quarter inside the Volunteers’ five-yard line after junior cornerback Morris Claiborne returned an interception 89 yards. Lee connected with junior wide receiver Rueben Randle for a five-yard touchdown pass two plays later to give LSU a 7-0 lead.
LSU added to its lead when Lee found running back Spencer Ware on an 13-yard screen pass for the sophomore’s first career receiving touchdown.
Tennessee found the endzone for the first and only time with 2:24 remaining in the half. A 44-yard reception by Tennesee wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers set up a two-yard touchdown run by running back Tauren Poole.
