While it may be the middle of summer, the atmosphere at the inaugural “Lady Tiger Lagniappe” would have told you otherwise.
Feeling like a mid-season tailgate party, a crowd of more than 1,100 fans gathered inside the PMAC Tuesday night, receiving autographs, snapping photos and reveling in the excitement of the newest addition to the Tiger coaching staff – Nikki Caldwell.
“It was exciting seeing all these fans out here supporting us,” Caldwell said. “There were so many great people we got a chance to meet. I’ve learned that this city and the LSU fans are hungry for women’s Connecticut.”
The players and the new coaching staff put on a hot shot competition, were put on the “hot seat” for a question and answer segment and even acted out a fake commercial giving the fans a pitch for the 2011 women’s basketball team.
Caldwell said she was thrilled with the large turnout and made it clear that keeping the team accessible to the fans and the community would be one of her priorities.
“The one thing we want to make that our team understands is that you can’t do this by yourself,” the former UCLA coach said. “You’re going to need your community, you’re going to need your friends, you’re going to need this institution to help you get to your goal of winning a championship.
