LSU offensive coordinator Gary Crowton is not expected to return next season and could take the same position at Maryland, Gannett News Services reported Wednesday. The report, which comes from LSU beat writer Glenn Guilbeau, said coaches contacted at the American Football Coaches Association convention in Dallas think Crowton is out at LSU. WWL in New Orleans is also reporting Crowton will not be returning to LSU. LSU coach Les Miles said Wednesday morning during a press conference that several teams have already inquired about Crowton. Guilbeau, however, reported Wednesday night that Crowton was offered a three-year, $1.5 million contract to be the Terapins news offensive coordinator. Crowton made $475,000 this past season and was due $500,000 next season for the final year of his contract. “Wen I went up there, they offered me a lot of money,” Crowton told Guilbeau. “And when I agreed to be interviewed (a few days ago), I wasn’t quite sure what Miles was going to do.” Crowton said Miles has not asked him to look elsewhere for a job, but needs to decide what’s best for his future, according to Guilbeau’s report. “But I’m going to sit down with my family tonight and see if this (the Maryland job) is what we want to do,” Crowton said. Maryland recently hired former UConn coach Randy Edsall as its new head coach. Edsall takes over the position previously held by Ralph Friedgen, who was forced out last month. Crowton has previous history with Edsall as the two worked together at Boston College from 1991-93 when Crowton was the quarterbacks coach and Edsall was the secondary coach. Miles was asked about Crowton on Wednesday morning, but gave a very vague response. “I am not ready to say there won’t be changes in the staff … we’ll have to see how that goes,” Miles said. An announcement on Crowton’s fate could come as early as tomorrow, but is unlikely. LSU coach Les Miles is expected to meet with Crowton and the rest of the coaching staff in a previously scheduled meeting. “It’s probably just a normal staff meeting,” Crowton told the Times-Picayune. “We’ll talk about recruiting.” Rumors swirled that Crowton had been fired, but were dismissed Wednesday when Advocate sports writer Randy Rosetta exchanged text messages with Crowton and posted the following on his twitter. “A direct quote from Gary Crowton about being fired: ‘No, I’ve been on a plane. Heading back to Baton Rouge right now. Have not been fired,'” Rosetta tweeted. Crowton also told Rosetta he has in fact interviewed for the Maryland job. If Crowton leaves, it will be either resigning or accepting another job. Miles doesn’t usually fire his coaches, he simply asks them to find another job. Attempts to reach Crowton were unsuccessful. —- Contact the Daily Reveille’s sports staff at [email protected]
