The University of New Orleans and Southern University-New Orleans may be merged, Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Tuesday.
Jindal announced at the Governor’s Mansion that he will ask the Louisiana Board of Regents to develop a study to determine if merging the two campuses is feasible. The merger, which would need to be approved by the Legislature, will only take place if the study finds the merger is feasible.
Jindal said he wants the study done by March 1 in time for session, which starts March 20.
Jindal cited the two schools’ low graduation rates as a reason for the possible merger.
The two schools would merge and move into the University of Louisiana System if the plan goes through, Jindal said. UNO is currently in the LSU System, while SUNO is in the Southern University System.
Jindal said he has already talked to the schools’ management boards about the possible merger.
