The LSU women’s doubles team of sophomore Keri Frankenberger and junior Whitney Wolf took control in the Virginia Winter Invitational last week.
Frankenberger and Wolf upset three ranked teams in the Lady Tigers’ first taste of competition since November.
The team traveled to Charlottesville, Va. for the Virginia Winter Invitational, held from Jan. 15-17. Frankenberger and Wolf began the first day with an upset of the No. 25 Arkansas duo of Kate Lukomskaya and Kelsey Sundaram 8-2.
They followed that up with an 8-6 defeat of the No. 49 Utah team of Paige Miles and Anastasia Putilina.
But they saved the best for last with a victory over the No. 16 ranked Virginia duo of Maria Fuccillo and Rashmi Teltumbde, knocking them off 8-2 on Monday.
Wolf, ranked No. 33 individually, also picked up a pair of wins in singles competition over the weekend. She defeated Lukomskaya and No. 82 ranked Putilina before falling to No. 88 Emily Fraser of Virginia on Monday.
The Lady Tigers will resume competition against Texas Tech and Prairie View A&M at W.T. ‘Dub’ Robinson Stadium on Feb. 2.
On the men’s side, senior Sebastian Carlsson closed out the men’s tennis winter break with a victory in the singles consolation finals at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.
Carlson knocked off Robert Grant of Kentucky, 6-2, 3-6, (10-6), on Monday. He and junior Neal Skupski teamed up in doubles play for the tournament, where they advanced to the doubles consolation final.
Although the final was not played because of time constraits, Carlsson and Skupski will enter the spring as the No. 27 doubles duo in the nation. Carlsson and Skupski also went undefeated in the Key Biscayne Invitiational, the other tournament in which LSU competed this winter.
The team begins the spring season Jan. 20 in Lubbock, Texas, at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The first home matches are a doubleheader Feb. 3 against Louisiana-Lafayette at 3 p.m. and New Orleans at 7 p.m. in Robinson Stadium.
