LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis plans to be back in the coaching box for the Tigers next season, at least for now.
Chavis shot down potential rumors Monday that linked him to the defensive coordinator opening at Texas.
“I’m flattered if I’m mentioned in any way with Texas,” said Chavis during a press conference at the Cotton Bowl. “Texas is a great program, and [Texas coach] Mack Brown is an outstanding, outstanding football coach who I have tremendous respect for and have known for a long time.
The open spot at Texas was created when former defensive coordinator Will Muschamp was hired by Florida to replace Urban Meyer, who stepped down last month.
A job at Texas would probably mean more money for the second-year coach, but that likely won’t lure him away from Baton Rouge.
“But I’m happy at LSU. I plan on being at LSU next year, and hopefully years to come,” Chavis said.
Chavis has been more than effective as the ringleader of LSU’s defense. His unit currently ranks No. 8 in total defense (301.6), No. 10 in pass defense (165.8), No. 9 in scoring defense (17.8) and No. 38 in rushing defense (135.8).
