The University named Gary Byerly as its new Graduate School dean. Byerly is currently the associate dean in the College of Science. Byerly’s term begins Jan. 1, pending LSU System Board of Supervisors approval, according to a news release.
Byerly has spent the past 34 years at the University, where he was the chairman for the Department of Geology and Geophysics, along with a graduate adviser. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Capetown and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a consulting professor at Stanford University, according to the release.
Byerly was chosen by a search committee headed by interim Vice Chancellor of Research and Economic Development Thomas Klei. He was chosen after the pool of applicants was narrowed to three, including himself and English professors Michelle Masse’ and Kevin Cope.
