Eddy Furniss, a former LSU All-American first baseman, will be the third former Tiger to have his jersey retired, the LSU athletic department announced Friday afternoon.
Furniss’ No. 36 jersey will be enshrined before the Tigers open their series against Mississippi State on April 22 at Alex Box Stadium. Furniss’ number will hang next to former LSU coach Skip Bertman’s No. 15 and former Golden Spikes Award-winning pitcher Ben McDonald’s No. 19.
Furniss, who is already a member of the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame and the College Baseball Hall of Fame, will be the 10th person to have his or her number retired at LSU.
“We are extremely pleased to bestow this honor upon Eddy Furniss, one of the greatest hitters in college baseball history,” said LSU athletic director Joe Alleva in a news release. “He is a man of high character who excelled both on the field and in the classroom, and he embodies all of the qualities we seek to instill into our student-athletes. He was a tremendous player and student, and he continues to impact lives through his medical practice.”
From 1995-1998, Furniss accumulated the most hits, total bases, RBI, home runs and doubles in Southeastern Conference history, which still stands today. The Nacogdoches, Texas native is also in the top-five all time in total bases, home runs and doubles in NCAA history.
While Furnis was at LSU, the Tigers won back-to-back national titles in 1996 and 1997. In his senior season, he took home the Dick Howser Trophy, given to the national players of the year. Along with being named an All-American in sophomore, junior and senior seasons, he also earned Academic All-American recognition three times.
After finishing at LSU, Furniss played professional baseball for five years before becoming a physician.
