David Liebe Hart is a painter, musician, writer, actor and comedian best known for his regular guest appearances on “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” The same comedic stylings seen in the show are coming to the Atomic Pop Shop on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. The Daily Reveille sat down with Hart to talk about his upcoming set, inspirations and writing style.
The Daily Reveille: You are a professional painter, comedian and singer. How is it that you got started as an artist?
David Liebe Hart: I was inspired by all kinds of art I saw other people doing. As a young boy, I would paint on buildings and trains. Eventually, I went to the Art Institute of Chicago for classes. I was an actor in some plays at the Goodman Theatre. My parents really helped support me through a lot of schooling to help develop myself as an artist.
TDR:When did you realize your work was becoming popular?
DLH: What made me famous was becoming a regular appearance on “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”
TDR: And how did you became involved with that show?
DLH: Well, a lot of luck. It was all about being at the right place at the right time. Very much like when you meet your wife. I met with Tim [Heidecker] and Eric [Wareheim] and they loved my song “Salame” and my stand-up comedy and they asked me to be on the show.
TDR: You talk a lot about being influenced by cartoons that you watched as a child. What were some of those cartoons?
DLH: I liked “Deputy Dog.” I liked “Heckle and Jeckel.” “Rocky and Bullwinkle” was a show that started as a puppet show. I loved “I Love Lucy” and “Mission Impossible.” They were like fertilizer for me. I wanted to do the things they were doing. I knew I had the same talent, I just started to follow my dream and do it.
TDR: How do you go about writing your stand-up comedy?
DLH: I write comedy about people that I know and about personal experiences. I also build my comedy the off types of comedy done by my favorite comedians. I loved watching Jackie Gleason from “The Honeymooners.”
TDR: One of your most famous songs is “Marcama.” Can you tell me what that song is about?
DLH: I met two extraterrestrials at La Brea Tar Pits. I was selling my portraits when one of them came up to me. She told me that she was an extraterrestrial and that they were studying me and my portraits. The second woman I met from the same distant star that is 411 light years away was named Marcama. She was from Star Korendor as well. She liked me very much and I decided to write a song about her.
TDR: Can you tell me more about that star?
DLH: Star Korendor. It is 411 lightyears away from Earth. The race that lives on that planet is called The Korendians. They worked with a guy named Bob Renaud from Massachusetts in 1960. He was a genius and was making a radio frequency and his frequency got mixed with a Korendian frequency. He is a great friend of them and he is their largest contact.
TDR: So, what we can expect from you during your show in Baton Rouge?
DLH: I am going to bring people happiness, joy and comedy through my art, my puppeteering and the songs I have written. I cannot wait to meet all of you guys down there!
Tickets for the show are $8.
