From the models’ nervous chatter backstage while they finished last minute touch ups, to the excited buzz from the crowd, Oneofakind Baton Rouge Fashion Week was full of anticipation.
The “BIG Night” was the main event, complete with a pink and blue color theme, and welcomed guests ranging from supportive family members of models, to media personnel and fashion enthusiasts. As the models strutted confidently down the runway, upbeat pop music blasted in the background, and the State Capitol was shining in the night sky, reminding guests that Baton Rouge Fashion Week is a celebration of the city’s growing art and fashion communities.
Models ranged from lively youths to fierce teens, some even traveling from out of state to model in the show.
Shannon Key traveled with her daughter, Rachel Key, from Little Rock, Arkansas to be a part of the show.
Rachel, who is only 17, is signed with Excel Agency, and has walked in a few shows before. She modeled for Chokolat Creme and iMe during the BARE night, and her mother said she was excited to see the different clothing she would be modeling during the BIG night show.
Backstage, the models were bustling with pre-show energy, snapping quick selfies, and excitedly chattering about the show. Markesha Holiday, the designer behind Antionette Couture, was hurriedly inspecting her models, making sure every thread was in place. This year was her first time showing at OBRFW, although she has worked on her line for three years.
“My inspiration for this Spring/Summer collection is classy and poised. Light and bright colors were my main go to when designing, and I think the audience will immediately think of spring when they see the collection,” Holiday said.
As her models sashayed down the runway with Beyonce sensually crooning through the speakers, the springtime theme was evident. Pale florals accompanied by electric purples and pinks dominated the collection. Delicate lace tops, as well as dresses with sexy cutouts were also noticeable elements within the collection.
Although individual designers were present, boutiques also showcased some of their spring and summer collections at the show. One of the boutiques, The Impeccable Pig, had a few representatives present for the show. One representative, Danielle, said she was excited to see all of the collections, hoping to spot some great neutrals and nudes, as well as light furs.
“I love watching New York Fashion Week, and I loved seeing all the amazing neutral pieces there, so hopefully we can see some tonight” Danielle said before the show. “I think events like these are good publicity for local boutiques to spotlight their merchandise.”
The designers, models, and staff of the event put together a show that is truly representative of Baton Rouge’s fashion, culture, and art scenes, while also highlighting the hard work of creative individuals.
Events like this showcase the talented individuals, passionate for their art in fashion, who reside in the Capital City.
