After needing a rally last night to beat No. 10 Georgia in Game 1, the No. 8 LSU softball team had no problems with the Bulldogs Saturday in Game 2, defeating them 5-1 at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Georgia.
The victory clinched the series for Tigers (28-8, 5-6 southeastern conference) and it was the first road series the Tigers have won this season. It was also LSU coach Beth Torina 200th victory with the Tigers.
In the top of the first, senior first baseman Sandra Simmons put the Tigers ahead with a solo home run, pacing the Tigers most the of way.
After tacking on another run from senior catcher Kellsi Kloss’ home run in the top of the fourth, Georgia (30-8, 4-4 SEC) cut the LSU lead with RBI double from senior infielder Tina Iosefa in the bottom half of the inning, making the score 2-1.
But the LSU offense responded in the next frame exploding for three runs, putting it in the lead for good.
The Tigers finished the game with seven hits. Simmons led the Tigers offense in hits, going 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI.
Last night’s hero, LSU sophomore pitcher Allie Walljasper, started Game 2 in the circle and stifled the Bulldogs lineup most of the day. Walljasper (5-4) went the distance, allowing seven hits and only one run on 93 pitches.
LSU will play the final game of the series tomorrow, at 1 p.m.
