LSU’s men’s and women’s golf teams both will be competing for a Southeastern Conference title when they tee off on Friday at the SEC Championships.
The No. 14 men’s squad looks to cap off an impressive spring season, where they have placed top-two in all but one event. They come into the event as defending champions after winning their first SEC title since 1987 last season.
The women’s team is looking for a solid end to what has been a rocky season. They do not have a top-3 finish this season and have finished 10th or worse is five of their eight competitions.
Senior Zach Wright has led the men’s team this spring winning two events this spring. Wright and company will tee off on Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia. The first round of men’s championships begins at 7:20 a.m.
Wright’s play has lifted his individual ranking to ninth in this week’s Golfstat player rankings. While a senior leads the men’s squad, a freshman has been the highlight on the women’s side.
Rookie Kathleen Gallagher has finished all but two of the Lady Tigers’ events as one of the team’s top-two golfers. The only events she did not were the first two of her career.
Both teams face tough fields, but the men face seven top-25 squads, including three top-10 teams.
The first round of the women’s championship starts at 8 a.m. on Legacy Course at the Greystone Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama.
“We look forward to playing here the last few years at Greystone and feel this is a really good test for our teams,” said coach Karen Bahnsen via news release. “We want to put three consistent rounds together this weekend that will set up us for returning to our home course at the start of next month for the regionals. The girls are excited and looking forward to the challenge.”
