After defeating the James Madison University in two games on Saturday in the NCAA Super Regional, the No 10. LSU softball team will advance to the Women’s College World Series.
The Tigers (50-16) defeated the Dukes (50-6) 3-2 in Game 3 to claim the Harrisonburg Super Regional and advance to their second-straight WCWS.
“They call us the Fighting Tigers, and you see why,” Torina said in an interview with ESPNU. “Our team never seems to do things the easy way, so it doesn’t surprise me that this is down to the wire.”
LSU freshman pitcher Sydney Smith and sophomore pitcher Allie Walljasper combined to allow five hits and three strikeouts, while giving up only one earned run.
Walljasper earned a win in her complete game effort in Game 2 and came in strong in relief.
LSU struck first in both contests, but in Game 3, did so in the opening frame. With two outs already gone, the Tigers strung together three-straight singles for a 1-0 lead.
But JMU wasn’t to go down without a fight.
In the fourth, Dukes sophomore Megan Good blasted a solo home run to equalize the contest. The longshot was her third in the Super Regional.
However, Torina’s Tigers struck back immediately plating two runs in the next inning. Junior right fielder Bailey Landry notched a RBI-single and junior catcher Sahvanna Jaquish RBI-sacrifice fly scored the other.
In Game 2, the Tigers wouldn’t get a hit off Good until the fourth inning, scoring twice and finishing the game 2-0.
Walljasper struck out five batters and in four of the seven innings sent the opposition down in order, in Game 2. She induced another 15 ground and fly outs, while walking only one hitter.
LSU advances to the WCWS for the third time in five season under Torina. The Tigers will play the winner of the Missouri-Michigan Super Regional in LSU’s World Series opener in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
