Attorney Jill Craft confirmed former Tiger Band Director Roy King has filed a lawsuit against the University.
The lawsuit lists the counts as denial of due process/rights to terminal pay, reprisal, First Amendment retaliation, and defamation, libel and slander.
King was placed on administrative leave April 6, and was terminated April 19. Since his firing, assistant director of bands Dennis Llinás has served as the interim band director.
LSU Media Relations Director Ernie Ballard said the University does not take this type of action lightly.
“In this case, both an audit and a separate investigation led to the decision that it was necessary to terminate Mr. King’s employment,” Ballard said.
The lawsuit specifically names the LSU Board of Supervisors, LSU President F. King Alexander, Director of Bands Damon Talley, LSU School of Music Dean Todd Queen and LSU Human Resources Director A.G. Monaco.
According to the lawsuit, King was accused of misconduct in offering stipends to the LSU Golden Girls and Color Guard. The lawsuit states the defendants approved the stipends.
The lawsuit also states the procedure and criteria for the scholarships and stipends was approved by the 1997 Internal Audit Report.
King’s lawsuit also referenced a $50,000 donation in 2010. The document said some University officials used the donation as an “illegal bribe/extortion.”
