With the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament contract in Hoover, Alabama, expiring in 2016, the Louisiana Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 1 Wednesday, which adds “college tournaments and championships” to a current law for drawing sporting events to Louisiana.
The bill would be included in the definition of “qualified event” or “qualified major event — like the Super Bowl, Final Four or NBA All-Star Game — under the Major Events Incentive Program. Authored by Sen. Danny Martiny, R-Kenner, the new bill will provide funding for the league tournament if it is brought to Louisiana but is subject to approval by the Louisiana House of Representative and Gov. John Bel Edwards.
The Joint Legislative Committee of the Budget would also have to agree to a contract with the SEC before money could be appropriated for the baseball tournament.
