The LSU football team has hired former Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech running backs coach Jabbar Juluke to fill the same position, the program announced Saturday morning via news release.
The program also announced the departure of Tiger wide receivers coach Tony Ball, who is leaving “to pursue other opportunities,” according to the release.
Juluke, a New Orleans native who is replacing UTSA coach Frank Wilson, was hired by the Red Raiders on Jan. 20 but has decided to vacate his position after a short period with the program.
Before heading to Lubbock, he spent three years with the Bulldogs, guiding former Bulldog running back Kenneth Dixon. Dixon currently stands as the NCAA’s second all-time leader in touchdowns and points scored and is tied for the record of games played with the touchdown.
Under Juluke direction, Louisiana Tech had consecutive 2000-yard rushing seasons.
Prior to coaching collegiately, Juluke completed a nine-year stint as the head coach for Edna Karr High School in New Orleans, hauling in an 80-39 record with one state title in three appearances.
“Jabbar is a veteran running backs coach with strong ties to New Orleans,” said LSU coach Les Miles in a news release. “He has a proven track record of success at both the college and high school level and he’s going to do a great job of continuing to develop our players both on and off the field.
“Jabbar is a great fit for us and we are excited to have him join our program.”
The former Southern safety was a senior during the Jaguars’ Black National Championship in 1993. Juluke also had stints at Frederick Douglass High School, St. Augustine High School, Brother Martin High School and O.P. Walker High School in his New Orleans prep coaching career.
“I’m sorry to see Coach Juluke go but this is a lifelong dream of his,” said Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury in a new release by the Red Raider program. “He’s a Louisiana guy and this is an opportunity for him to go home. I know he will be an incredible asset for Coach Miles and their program.”
Ball spent nine years at Georgia before coaching LSU’s wide receiving corps for only one season in Baton Rouge. Ball replaced former Tiger receiver coach Adam Henry, who left the LSU staff to fill the same position with the San Francisco 49ers. Henry now has the same job with the New York Giants.
