Unknown Mortal Orchestra is an American and New Zealand rock band started by Ruben Nielson. The band specializes in ppsychedelicpop/rock, garage rock, lo-fi music. (I’ve also had some friends describe it as depression funk but I digress.) Since their start in 2010, the group has released 3 records, the most recent of which “Multi Love” won best alternative album at the New Zealand music awards. Despite only knowing about the band for about a year now, they have quickly made their way to the top of my most listened to bands. UMO unusual take on tonality is a nice change of pace from the typical chord progressions that appear so often in today’s alternative music scene.
