LSU freshman guard Antonio Blakeney has been awarded Southeastern Conference co-Freshman of the Week, sharing the designation with Kentucky freshman guard Jamal Murray, the league announced Monday.
Including his career-high, 32-point night against Florida on Feb. 27, Blakeney has scored at least 20 points in his last three contests. Earlier last week, he poured in 22 points on 7-of-19 shooting in 85-65 loss to Arkansas on Feb. 23.
Over the last three games, Blakeney is shooting 8-of-16 from three-point territory.
Simmons selected as finalist for pair of honors
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has chosen LSU freshman forward Ben Simmons as a finalist for the Integris Wayman Tisdale Award and the Oscar Robertson Trophy.
Simmons is the only player to be among the finalists for both awards. The Tisdale Award, given to nation’s best freshman, features five players. The Robertson Trophy, which includes 11 players, is awarded to the nation’s most outstanding player.
Simmons joins one other Southeastern Conference player on each list and both are Kentucky guards, freshman Jamal Murray and sophomore Tyler Ulis.
Oklahoma senior guard Buddy Hield, who played against Simmons and the Tigers on Jan. 30 at the PMAC, is among the finalist for the Robertson Trophy. Marquette freshman forward Henry Ellenson is also a Tisdale Award finalist, having faced Simmons and LSU on Nov. 23 in Brooklyn, New York as part of the Legends Classic.
