Fool’s Gold Records is an independent music label based in Brooklyn, New York. The label was founded by two DJs, A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs, in 2007. Together they realized an opportunity to be on the forefront of the emerging underground hip-hop and electronic music scene. The label soon became a brand with its own logos, merchandise, and mascots, but its first major commercial success came in 2008. Then unknown rapper Kid Cudi signed to Fool’s Gold and released the hit single “Day n’ Nite,” which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, founders A-trak and Catchdubs have signed a plethora of new dance and hip-hop artists. Some of the most notable include Alvin Risk, Danny Brown, Duck Sauce, Flosstradamus, RL Grime, and Run the Jewels.
Fool’s Gold has become known as one of the labels to pioneer the merging of hip-hop and dance music. It has been said that the label specializes in “party-first genre-mixing”, which simply means Fool’s Gold likes to party, has good tastes, and knows what the cool kids are listening to.
