One University organization is helping the community get into the holiday spirit.
The Society of American Foresters Student Chapter at LSU has been selling Christmas trees on campus for more than 50 years. This year’s sale began Monday and continues through Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
The organization is set up behind the Renewable Natural Resources Building on Highland Road at Nicholson Drive Extension.
Mason LeBlanc, president of the Society of American Foresters at LSU, said the annual sale is the club’s biggest fundraiser.
“The club goes to Lee Memorial Forest, an LSU research station, to harvest and wrap all of the trees for delivery,” LeBlanc said.
Along with serving as a teaching facility, the Lee Memorial Forest in Washington Parish is home to several research projects.
One research project works with sustainable silviculture — the practice of controlling the establishment, growth, composition, health and quality of forests — and soil productivity to determine if any negative effects come from conventional harvest on new growth compared with trees previously on the site.
The trees sold are Leyland Cypress and Carolina Sapphire. Both species are locally grown and freshly cut from Lee Memorial Forest. Trees will be replaced with new seedlings at the Lee Memorial Forest.
Trees cost $7 per foot, and the Society of American Foresters accepts payment only in cash or check.
