Returning to its old stomping ground, New Orleans-based alternative rock trio Better Than Ezra will perform at Walk-On’s Bistreaux and Bar Friday at 8 p.m. With tickets on sale for $20, the concert is open to adults 21 and up.
Walk-On’s bar manager Seth Dupré said the restaurant has had the band perform several times over the years when LSU plays Alabama at home.
The last time the band performed, Dupré said almost 3,000 people attended. The restaurant hopes to top that number this year.
“They’re local guys and everybody from LSU knows about them, so it’s always a good time,” he said.
When University alumni Kevin Griffin, Tom Drummond, Joel Rundell and Cary Bonnecaze formed Better Than Ezra in 1988, the band began performing on campus at fraternity parties and local bars to gain recognition.
After lead guitarist Rundell’s sudden passing in 1990, the remaining band members decided to keep Better Than Ezra going. Following a break to reassess how the band would move forward with only three of its original members, the trio signed with The End Records and released eight albums.
When Bonnecaze left the group in 1996, he was replaced by drummer Travis McNabb, who was later replaced by Michael Jerome in 2009.
The band’s most recent album, “All Together Now,” hit the market in 2014.
As a tribute to the University, the group’s 2011 album “Death Valley” consists of eight songs, including “Hey Fighting Tigers,” “Hell No!” and “This Time of Year.”
