Coming off of a successful Real Men Wear Pink fashion show, in which all proceeds went to the American Cancer Society, You Got Served founder Jian Massucco is proud of the strides her club has made.
Massucco founded the club in 2010 as a high school organization when she was a sophomore at Baton Rouge Magnet High School. She felt that clubs could sometimes be so focused on getting volunteer hours requirements, their service seemed “ingenuine” as a result. The difference between You Got Served and other community service clubs is that members want to volunteer, Massucco said.
“It shouldn’t be something that’s forced,” Massucco said. “It should be something that people elect to do. They want to come out and serve.”
In 2011, Massucco was nominated and selected as a Louisiana Young Hero, which showed Massucco’s impact on the community at such a young age.
The community-based organization hosts their own events, such as fundraisers and donation drives, to achieve their mission of helping impoverished families and children in the Greater Baton Rouge Area.
“[The club has] just continuously grown by leaps and bounds,” Massucco said. “I never thought it would be this big.” The club eventually expanded as new chapters began at EBR schools. Now in college, Massucco brought the club to the University.
Listing her mother as her role model and “number one motivation.”Massucco watched her mom spend her life dedicated to helping HIV patients and helping her care for others. It was her mother’s example that encouraged Massucco to create her own community service club to help impoverished children and families.
“Letting them know we care is one of the most impactful things,” Massucco said, as the club has worked with Hope Pantry, the Boys and Girls’ Club, and local schools and nursing homes as they work to continue their mission of giving back to the community.
As CEO of You Got Served, Massucco plans for bigger and better things. “I want it to continue grow, making sure all of our chapters are carrying on the legacy properly,” she said. “I plan on bringing it to my graduate school — getting it across states and the country. Just making an impact on bigger and better things.”
Her genuine passion for service is the fire that keeps Massucco going. Being always on the go, she balances her days by meditating during her studio time which she devotes to yoga and dance.
As a Baton Rouge native, she strives to see a healthier Baton Rouge and community. She sees the potential Baton Rouge has, and wants the community to be united through service. She wants others to know that her organization has “got your back.”
