As you throw together your costume and plan trips to haunted houses, turn on Spotify and listen to this Halloween playlist.
While the five songs that made the top of the list aren’t necessarily conventional Halloween songs, they are guaranteed to give you a spook.
1. “Disturbia” — Rihanna
One can only guess that Rihanna had Halloween on her mind when making this summer 2008 hit. Even the music video exudes an eerie vibe, with dancers in monstrous make-up performing with almost robot-like movements.
With lyrics like “It can creep up inside you, and consume you / a disease of the mind, it can control you / I feel like a monster” over a catchy pop beat, “Disturbia” will keep any costume party going all night.
2. “Monster” — Kanye West, feat. Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Bon Iver
This star-studded track reached the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 list in 2010. Each artist spits a verse comparing themselves to monsters killing the music industry.
From this track, Minaj released arguably one of her best verses, to date — “Everybody knows I’m a mother-f***ing monster.”
3. “3 A.M.” — Eminem
Eminem is known for his controversial lyrics, but it doesn’t get much more violent than his song, “3 A.M.” The rapper imagines himself as a horror movie antagonist, depicting how he kills his victims.
The chorus itself shows just how brutal this song is: “It’s 3 a.m in the morning / put my key in the door and bodies laying all over the floor / and I don’t remember how they got there/ but I guess I must’ve killed ‘em.”
“3 A.M.” is the perfect fit for a horror movie soundtrack.
4. “Bad Romance” — Lady Gaga
Released in 2009, “Bad Romance” is still the MTV Video Music Awards’ most awarded video by a female artist.
With lyrics expressing love for one’s grotesque flaws and an expected eerily corky video complete with a funky beat, this song can turn anyone into a little monster.
5. “Thriller” – Michael Jackson
It isn’t Halloween without this smash hit by the King of Pop blaring in the background.
Released in 1982, the album, “Thriller,” is still one of the best-selling albums in American history. This is thanks, in part, to the title track.
Though it may be a bit cliché, the song and accompanying mini-film are Halloween staples and will have everyone doing the zombie-dance.
