For the first time in 12 seasons, Les Miles will not lead LSU out of the tunnel and onto Tiger Stadium on Saturday.
His replacement? Ed Orgeron.
Ed Orgeron’s debut as LSU’s interim coach begins against Missouri and Orgeron could become the fourth consecutive LSU head coach to win in his coaching debut.
Dating back to 2014, LSU has a seven-game win streak in the month of October and hasn’t lost a home game in October since 2009, when LSU was defeated 13-3 against Florida.
Leonard Fournette “game-time decision”
Will Leonard Fournette miss his second game as a Tiger?
“As of right now I don’t know if he’s going to play or not,” Orgeron said Thursday.
Orgeron said Fournette, who has been battling a lingering sprained ankle, is a “game-time” decision and hadn’t practiced up until Thursday.
“When you walk down that hill and feel all those people and you walk out in that stadium, you may feel a little bit better,” he said. “Sometimes they get better on Saturday. As of right now, I don’t know if he’s going to play or not. We’ll see.”
Godchaux to play
It’s been an eventful week for defensive end Davon Godchaux.
Early Monday morning Godchaux was arrested on charges of misdemeanor domestic abuse/child endangerment and false imprisonment charges. The East Baton Rouge district attorney’s office decided to drop the charges on Tuesday and Godchaux returned to the team on Wednesday.
“He’s been practicing,” Orgeron said on Thursday evening. “Seems like thing have cleared up. We still have a few discussions to make. It’s a day-by-day basis, but I think everything is looking pretty good.”
The injured
Like Fournette, possibly, right tackle Toby Weathersby will not play on Saturday, Orgeron said.
Weathersby had a teammate roll, and fall, on his ankle against Mississippi State. Weathersby missed last week’s 18-13 loss against Auburn.
Ethan Pocic, who missed a couple of practices earlier this week, is expected to play, as is Kevin Toliver. Toliver missed LSU’s setback against Auburn, but was seen practicing earlier this week and is expected to play, Orgeron said.
Stopping Missouri’s high powered offense
Missouri ranks No. 1 in total offense in the Southeastern Conference, and its quarterback sophomore Drew Lock leads the conference in passing yards and touchdowns.
Under first-year offensive coordinator Josh Heupel, the Missouri offense has become fast-paced as he likes to run an up-tempo style offense.
To prepare for Missouri quick style of play, Orgeron said the defense has practiced against two different offenses.
“We’ve had two offenses going at the defenses back-to-back,” Orgeron said. “We’ve practiced really fast and I think Dave Aranda has had a really great plan all week. He’s been against these offenses before.”
