Moore status
Junior fullback J.D. Moore did not return to the game after suffering an undisclosed injury in the first quarter of LSU’s 38-21 victory against Ole Miss on Saturday night.
Moore suffered a stinger early in Saturday’s game and did not return, according to LSU Sports Radio Network.
LSU coach Ed Orgeron confirmed that Moore was injured during his postgame press conference but said he didn’t know the extent of the injury.
“I’ve got to check,” Orgeron said. “I don’t know exactly what happened but he was out. He’s a tough cat.”
In Moore’s stead, sophomore fullback Bry’Keithon Mouton flourished. He provided a key block on two of junior running back Leonard Fournette’s breakaway touchdown runs.
After all, it wasn’t his first time stepping in for the incumbent Moore. Mouton started LSU’s final five games last season after Moore tore his ACL.
“J.D. went down, and next man up,” said senior tight end Colin Jeter. “Bry did a good job of going in and getting the job done.”
Riley’s career night
Senior linebacker Duke Riley wasn’t content with his career-high 14 tackles.
After nearly doubling his previous career-high, Riley said he left a few tackles out on the field.
“I made a few mistakes, I have to get those corrected,” Riley said. “I missed a few, honestly. I should have had way more than 14.”
The first-year starter added to his statline in the third quarter with his first career interception of the SEC’s second-leading passer as the Tigers held him to a season-low 209 passing yards.
“I just give my credit to my [defensive] line and Kendell [Beckwith] next to me,” Riley said. “We play off of each other, we play with each other. It’s easy when you have guys like [Davon] Godchaux, Lewis Neal, Arden Key, and Beckwith next to me.”
Campbell out
Freshman lineman Donavaughn Campbell was seen in a walking boot prior to LSU and Ole Miss’ kickoff Saturday night with an unspecified lower leg injury.
Campbell, a reserve offensive guard, was not listed on LSU’s depth chart against Ole Miss and has played in three games this season.
Spreading it out
LSU’s 204 yards through the air were evenly distributed.
Junior quarterback Danny Etling threw the ball 28 times, targeting nine different receivers. Junior wide receiver Malachi Dupre earned the most targets (6), catching five for 52 yards.
Etling completed his first seven pass attempts and finished the game 19 of 28 for 204 yards.
Junior wide receiver D.J. Chark caught the lone touchdown through the air, a 40-yard strike for his third consecutive game with a touchdown.
“I guess I’m getting used to catching the ball,” said senior tight end Colin Jeter, who caught two of his three targets for 21 yards. “Danny’s doing a great job of dishing it around and always finding the guy that seems to be open. He comes in and works every week, and it shows on Saturdays.”
