For the fourth installation of DJ 5/4’s exploration of quintessential math rock bands, The Math Lab Special Edition Math Rock Masterclass brings the focus to Tera Melos. Forming in Sacramento, CA (a la Hella) in 2004, Tera Melos has released four studio albums that help put “math rock” in the dictionary (figuratively speaking, of course). Although the group disavows the moniker “math rock”, they pretty much helped solidify what the genre is and can be. Every song is a constantly starting-and-stopping mishmash of whacked out guitar (thanks, Nick Reinhart) and absolutely mind bending drums (thanks, John Clardy). Every album has a distinct sound, but they all orbit around one concept: complete unorthodoxy and disregard for what many consider “music”. Tera Melos is dynamic, loud, soft, abrasive, and subversive; all rolled into one package. They’re not for everyone, but they sure do make for interesting listening.
