After a week of uncertainty, there is no doubt.
Danny Etling will get the nod for LSU against Auburn on Saturday, which will be his first road start as a Tiger.
Head coach Les Miles confirmed Etling will be the starter after LSU’s 23-20 win over Mississippi State.
“He’s comfortable with all the calls,” Miles said. “He understands it takes some time to understand all the motions and the stems that we do, but he’s really capable.”
Etling’s 19-for-30, 215-yard performance established him as the best man for the job.
Former starter Brandon Harris did not play a snap during the Tigers’ game on Saturday. Harris was benched for Etling in the second quarter against Jacksonville State.
“I do very much like Danny and I think he’s done a great job,” Miles said.
Etling’s ability to stay poised in the pocket and spread the ball around gives LSU a deep variety of play calls.
Seven different players caught passes from Etling against Mississippi State. Tight end Foster Moreau made the first catch of his career while fellow teammate D.J. Chark scored on a 37-yard touchdown reception.
Etling appeared to shake off a rough second half against Jacksonville State, where he went 1-for-6 with an interception.
“I think I felt comfortable the whole game,” Etling said. “I’ve played 12 games before this and the coaches really got me ready. I have some really good teammates that are always behind me.”
Malachi Dupre and Travin Dural each caught four passes from Etling. Both receivers had much better outings than in the Jacksonville State game, where Dural only caught one pass and Dupre had two drops.
“We’ve been working with him for a while,” Dural said. “You know, as soon as he stepped on campus, we always threw routes with him, threw it against a 7-on-7. We always had a connection with him and [Harris] because both of those guys took a lot of reps.”
Etling also did a great job of finding running backs in the open. Leonard Fournette, Derrius Guice and J.D. Moore each had a reception against the Bulldogs.
Defenses will have a tough time guessing whether LSU will run or pass as Miles and Cam Cameron continue to allow Etling to open up the playbook.
For now, Miles just wants to get Etling used to running the offense.
“He likes to work hard,” Miles said. “More than anything, you have to tell him to come off the field.”
