Republican Rep. Sonny Borrelli of Arizona introduced a bill that would allow students and faculty to carry concealed weapons on any public college campus. House Bill 2072 proposes that students can only carry a concealed weapon after getting a permit, which requires firearm training and multiple criminal and mental health checks. “A conversation must be started about the failed university and college policies that don’t allow faculty or students to defend themselves that is permitted by the state and that is their right under both U.S. and Arizona Constitution,” stated Borrelli.
The proposal comes 3 months after a deadly shooting on Northern Arizona University’s campus. When an argument turned physical, Colin Brough, 20, was left dead and 3 others wounded. One student is charged with first-degree murder.
Arizona state law permits the storage of a firearm in a locked car, out-of-sight, but NAU, University of Arizona, and Arizona State University prohibits all guns on campus, with the exception of law-enforcement officers. The bill is one of many similar unsuccessful bills proposed in the past decade.
