Man arrested for felony possession of a firearm, additional charges during traffic stop
Warren Nelson, 35, of Darrow, LA, was arrested during a traffic stop on Nicholson Drive on June 24 said LSUPD spokesperson Lt. Kevin Scott. The vehicle had a temporary license plate that was obscured and officers observed an open brandy container in the center console during the stop, Scott said. Nelson consented to a vehicle search that revealed a loaded firearm between the driver’s seat and the center console. LSUPD learned of Nelson’s status as a felon and booked him on charges of felon in possession of a firearm, improper display of temporary license plate, vehicle registration required and open alcoholic container in vehicle, Scott said.
Man arrested after assault in School of Veterinary Medicine parking lot
Xavier Hawkins, 26, of New Orleans, was booked for simple battery, aggravated assault, theft and three fugitive warrants on June 24, Scott said. At 7 a.m., LSUPD officers responded to a report that Hawkins was engaged in a disturbance inside a vehicle on Skip Bertman Drive in front of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, Scott said. A witness reported seeing Hawkins repeatedly hit the driver of the vehicle before the vehicle parked in the Vet Med parking lot. Hawkins and the victim then exited the vehicle, and Hawkins proceeded to grab a “large” rock and chase the victim before fleeing, Scott said.
Officers located Hawkins running east on Skip Bertman Drive and detained him. The witness and victim both positively identified Hawkins, and the victim reported Hawkins also stole his mobile phone before fleeing, Scott said. LSUPD then discovered Hawkins had two outstanding bench warrants for traffic violations and a warrant for theft. Hawkins was subsequently booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Student issued summons after accident on West Lakeshore Drive
On June 25, 20-year-old student Austin Jordan was issued a misdemeanor summons for negligent injury, reckless operation of a vehicle and open container of alcohol in a vehicle, Scott said. At 8:15 p.m., LSUPD received a call about a vehicle leaving the road, striking a tree and coming to rest in the University Lakes on West Lakeshore Drive near the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority house. The caller also reported the driver of the vehicle appeared to be unconscious, Scott said.
Officers arrived on the scene and soon called for Fire and Rescue and EMS. Jordan displayed signs of intoxication and officers discovered an open can of alcohol after removing Jordan from the vehicle, Scott said. Officers recovered a blood sample through Jordan’s implied consent, as he was unable to respond to questioning. An LSU student walking on the sidewalk near the crash site sustained minor injuries to her legs after jumping out of the vehicle’s path at the time of the crash, Scott said. Jordan sustained moderate injuries.
Man arrested on outstanding warrants following LSUPD stop
Brian Douglas, 30, of Baton Rouge, was arrested on outstanding warrants in East Baton Rouge and Jefferson Parishes on June 26, Scott said. LSUPD officers established contact with Douglas while he was riding a bicycle at Nicholson Extension and CEBA Lane, Scott said. LSUPD officers discovered Douglas had two outstanding warrants for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, and one outstanding warrant in Jefferson Parish for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Douglas was arrested and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, Scott said.
