Bobby April has joined LSU’s special teams as an analyst, the school announced Thursday afternoon.
One day after the official introduction of new offensive coordinator Matt Canada, the Tigers agree to bring on the longtime NFL coach, April, as an analyst for the unit during the bowl season.
“We are very fortunate to have Coach April join our staff,” Orgeron said. “He is one of the best special teams coaches in the history of football and our players will benefit tremendously because of Coach April’s knowledge of the game.
“Coach April is a great man and a true Louisianan. He loves Louisiana and from the first time we talked he said he wanted to help his state. It means everything to us to have great people who can be a part of our program like Coach April.”
April, 63, is a Chalmette High School and Nicholls State University alumnus and has worked as a special teams coach for multiple NFL teams, including the New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills.
The New Orleans native directed the Bills to a No. 1 overall ranking in special teams during the 2008 season. He has not coached at the collegiate level since 1990 when he was Ohio State’s secondary coach.
During his 25 years in the NFL, April’s special teams units scored 21 touchdowns, 12 coming on kickoffs and nine on punt returns.
Orgeron does not plan to officially hire a special teams coordinator until after LSU’s Dec. 31 Citrus Bowl game, the coach said Wednesday. Orgeron fired former special teams coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto one day after he was officially promoted as head coach on Nov. 26.
“Yeah. We have our eye on that position,” he said Wednesday. “But, we’ve got to wait until after the bowl and just see how everything pans out.”
