Leonard Fournette’s college career is officially done.
Fournette announced at news conference on Friday that he will not play in the Citrus Bowl versus No. 13 Louisville on Dec. 31.
“It’s best for my future,” Fournette said. “It was a tremendous feeling coming out that tunnel each and every game.”
The junior tailback has been bothered all season by an ankle injury that has caused him to miss four games.
“He bled purple and gold,” said LSU coach Ed Orgeron.
Orgeron and Fournette came to the decision for the 6-foot-2, 235-pound running back to sit out the bowl game. Fournette said his ankle is still recovering and his goal now is to get it back to “100 percent.”
Fournette played in seven games this season rushing for 843 yards and eight touchdowns. His career ends with 3,830 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns.
The New Orleans native is fourth on LSU’s all-time rushing list and tied for third behind Charles Alexander among career rushing touchdowns.
“This is one of the hardest thing to do,” Fournette said.
Fournette will travel to LSU’s bowl game to show support for his teammates and plans to participate in LSU’s annual pro day.
“Everybody is going to have their [own] opinion, Fournette said. “But for me, I’m an LSU Tiger forever.”
