The New Orleans VooDoo won and lost last week, defeating Chicago 46-40 on March 20 and losing to Georgia 43-40 on March 26. New Orleans (6-3) played in front of a crowd of 16,132 at the New Orleans Arena in Saturday’s loss to the Georgia Force. The loss was the second in three weeks for New Orleans. The VooDoo also lost at Georgia in the season opener 46-44 on Jan. 30. Georgia (7-2) relinquished the lead only once to the VooDoo. New Orleans kicker Brian Schmitz gave the VooDoo a 26-24 advantage in the third quarter with a 25-yard field goal. The Force ripped off 13 unanswered points to retake the lead. Force running back Robert Thomas scampered into the end zone from one yard out, and Force quarterback Matt Nagy threw a touchdown pass to Luke Leverson to put the Force up 37-26 after three quarters. New Orleans cut the lead to three, 43-40, late in the fourth quarter. The VooDoo defense stopped the Force on the New Orleans four-yard line with 1:04 remaining, but Andy Kelly’s incomplete pass on a fourth down conversion with 19 seconds to play ended New Orleans’ chance at a comeback. Kelly finished 32 of 50 for 267 yards and three touchdowns. Offensive specialist Aaron Bailey led VooDoo receivers with 11 catches for 112 yards and one score. The VooDoo won at Chicago 46-40 thanks to a defensive stop in overtime. On the first possession in the extra period, VooDoo defensive specialist Chris Pointer intercepted Chicago quarterback Raymond Philyaw at the VooDoo three-yard line. Kelly completed four consecutive passes following the interception and drove the VooDoo down to the Rush eight-yard line. After an incompletion, Kelly found Bailey on an eight-yard touchdown pass for the winning score. Both teams’ kickers had an opportunity to win in regulation. But Chicago kicker Keith Gispert shanked a 34-yard field goal with 2:02 in the fourth quarter, followed by Schmitz’s missed 27-yarder for the VooDoo as time expired in regulation. Kelly completed 34 of 46 passes for 311 yards and six touchdowns. VooDoo wide receiver Carl Bond earned Offensive Player of the Game honors by recording 11 receptions for 126 yards and four touchdowns.
