The LSU men’s tennis team finishes a busy last week of the regular season on Saturday against Arkansas.
Seniors Jason Hazley and Peter Richman will be honored after the doubles point of the match, which is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
No. 15 LSU (17-7, 4-6 Southeastern Conference) moved up a spot in the rankings this week thanks in part to its two seniors.
In Wednesday’s 6-1 victory against in-state rival and No. 18 Tulane, Richman and Hazley defeated Johan Kane-West and David Goulet 9-7 after seeing LSU’s No. 7 duo of Mark Growcott and Ken Skupski lose for the first time in seven matches.
Richman and Hazley’s victory, coupled with a win by Danny Bryan and Colt Gaston on court two, extended LSU’s streak of matches winning the doubles point to nine games.
“It was a big win for all the national implications,” said LSU men’s coach Jeff Brown. “But to beat Tulane in this significant rivalry was important to our team and to our seniors.”
The Tigers now have won four consecutive matches. LSU defeated Mississippi State, Auburn, Alabama and Tulane all within the last week and a half.
“It looks like we’re coming together at this time of year, and that’s exciting,” Brown said.
Arkansas (4-15, 2-8 SEC) is led by No. 75 Rohan Gajjar. Gajjar is the only ranked singles player on the Razorbacks lineup and is 20-13 in singles play this season.
LSU only boasts one ranked singles player in No. 61 Growcott, who is 19-12 this season.
The LSU women’s tennis team looks to rebound at Arkansas after faltering to Tulane in New Orleans Wednesday.
No. 15 Tulane dismantled LSU 7-0 one day after LSU handed Louisiana-Lafayette a 7-0 beating.
LSU (11-10, 3-7 SEC) swept Louisiana-Lafayette for the second time this season.
The win extended LSU’s win streak to four games.
LSU won all three doubles matches and won five of the singles matches in straight sets. Staten Spencer was the only Lady Tiger to go into three sets in singles play as she defeated Chanelle Meijer 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 to preserve the shutout.
Tulane snapped LSU’s four-game winning streak on Wednesday in New Orleans.
Tulane won every doubles match and every singles match in straight sets.
It was only the third time this season LSU failed to score a point and the first time against a non-SEC foe (Kentucky and Florida).
Three LSU players saw their singles winning streaks come to an end — Marina Chiarelli, Tiffany Tucker and Camila Caliari saw their five, six and seven game winning streaks, respectively, end.
Arkansas (11-9, 1-9 SEC) is led by two ranked singles players — No. 78 Vlatka Jovanovic and No. 112 Maryori Franco. The Lady ‘Backs posted their only conference win last weekend with a 5-2 against Auburn.
“We just have to focus on getting back on track for the Arkansas match,” said LSU women’s coach Tony Minnis.
