As its facilities expand, University Recreation is offering rock-climbing, beach-volleyball instructional classes and a beach- volleyball intramural team.
A fee increase from $30 to $45 has motivated University Recreation officials to make improvements and offer new services. In the past semester, an indoor rock-climbing wall and sand volleyball courts have helped officials to utilize the space as they prepare to add nearly 7,000 square feet to the current facility.
The instructional classes are free to members, said Robyn Bossier, a graduate student in kinesiology and the head of instructional sports.
Some students said the classes sounded entertaining and different.
“It sounds interesting,” said Jillian Wilkerson, an experimental statistics graduate student. “I would probably take them with friends.”
University Recreation will hold two rock-climbing classes, set to begin next week. The first class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the second class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Bossier said.
Each section will hold only six people, Bossier said, and the classes will last from Feb. 14 to March 9.
Emily Coco, a business management senior, said that some of the new classes sounded worth trying.
“I would especially like to take the rock-climbing class,” she said.
Beach volleyball instructional classes will last from Feb. 28 to March 17.
Bossier said the planning for these new classes began in the fall when University Recreation completed construction of the indoor rock wall.
Other students said the classes sound fun, but are too time-consuming to fit into busy school schedules.
“I might take them during the summer, but I’m too busy with my classes during the school year,” said Jessica Coco, a law student.
Bossier said University Recreation officials are unsure of what kind of participation these classes will have from students.
“We are hoping that the people who take the classes will enjoy them and spread the word,” Bossier said.
University Recreation is also currently organizing a new sand- volleyball intramural team, Bossier said.
Students can register Feb. 15-18 from 2 to 8 p.m. at University Recreation, Bossier said. The games are scheduled to begin on Feb. 27.
