A quiz designed to test students’ knowledge of famous black figures in American history is also determining their ability to match faces with names such as Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglass and Toni Morrison.
As part of a monthly series of cultural awareness programs at the African American Culture Center, Isaac Netters, director of the AACC, created what he called a cultural accountability quiz.
Netters said the quiz consists of a collage of pictures paired with a list of names students must match.
The quiz’s intent is to make students and administration aware of their cultural knowledge.
“We need to hold ourselves accountable and this is a step in the right direction,” he said.
Netters said the AACC’s monthly programs will take the quizzes a step further by teaching students about the famous black Americans pictured in the quizzes.
Netters said the quizzes will be available in the AACC, and he will distribute them to various departments.
He said he hopes professors will use them in their classrooms to allow him to study students’ knowledge of African-American culture.
Katrice Albert, vice provost of equity and diversity, said students should be aware of their knowledge of African American culture.
“You are measuring yourself with your own measuring stick,” she said. “You can challenge yourself to become more culturally aware.”
Albert James, agriculture business senior, took the quiz.
“I knew I was going to do bad,” James said. “You don’t learn enough history, enough about black culture.”
After taking the quiz James said he wanted to learn more about famous black Americans and that the quiz could be extended to test knowledge of all cultures.
“I think it’s a great idea,” James said. “A lot of people don’t know their history.”
