SG forum to encourage questions, participation
From the student body president’s salary to the duties of a University senator, Student Government officials will offer students a behind-the-scenes look at SG Tuesday.
SG will hold an open forum at 8 p.m. in the Union Red River Room for all students interested in learning about the different branches and positions in SG, said Student Senate Speaker Jeremy Griggs.
Representatives from all branches of SG, including the executive office, Student Senate and University Court justices, will answer questions about their duties, such as serving on committees and attending regular government meetings.
“Everyone is encouraged to come, even for just a chance to come and voice their concerns about SG,” Griggs said.
SG organized the forum to help increase the number of candidates and voter turnout for the Spring 2002 elections, he said.
SG will hold the upcoming elections April 10, but those interested in running for office should apply this week.
Any student interested in running for a position on college council, Student Senate, University Court, athletic council or student body president and vice president must fill out an intent of candidacy form in Johnston Hall before 4:30 p.m. Friday, said Jennifer Ali, SG commissioner of elections
All full-time students in good academic and disciplinary standing with the University are eligible to run but must present a student ID and agree to attend one of four informational sessions March 11 and 12, Ali said.
“We encourage people to come and run for a position,” she said.
