Candidates hit trail as SG elections draw near
Students will notice an abundance of push cards and fliers this semester as six Student Government president hopefuls campaign for students’ votes.
The six candidates officially began campaigning March 12 for the Spring 2002 SG election and should present their platforms to students as next week’s absentee voting and the April 10 general election approach.
The list of president and vice president candidates includes Lee Abbott and Regan Ilgenfritz; Raymond Blanchard and Alexander Evans; Darrell Broussard and Mark Higgins II; Jason Dore and Adria DeLaune; Jeremy Griggs and William Kaufman; and Chris Trew and Matt Callac.
Students have not had to decide between so many candidates since they elected Robert Wood and Vincent Russo in Spring 2000. SG Commissioner of Elections Jennifer Ali said learning about the candidates will help students feel confident about choosing among them.
“The best thing to do is go out and talk to the candidates, see their platform and see what they want to do for LSU and for SG,” Ali said. “Get to know them, and base your decision on that.”
Ali said she expects the candidates to make their names more known closer to absentee elections next Tuesday and Wednesday.
All full-time students can vote during absentee elections between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the Johnston Hall lobby.
“[Absentee voting is convenient for students] because on election day you have to go to specific buildings to vote,” Ali said.
In addition to president and vice- president elections, students will be asked to vote for Athletic Council, Union Governing Board and Student Senate representatives during the election.
In addition to electing a new student leader, students also can cast a ballot on whether or not to approve increasing the Student Recreational Sports Complex fee by $15.
