LSU’s Duncan wins third consecutive tourney title
LSU senior Meredith Duncan became only the third Lady Tiger ever to win consecutive tournament titles as the women’s golf team finished fifth overall at this weekend’s Sun Trust Lady Gator Invitational at the University of Florida Golf Course.
Duncan, who is the world’s No.1-rated amateur women’s golfer, finished the weekend with a 54-hole score of 4-over par 214, seven shots ahead of the nearest competitor.
She also won the last tournament she competed in, the Furman Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, S.C., on the weekend of Oct. 26-28, 2001.
She joins former Lady Tiger greats Jenny Lidback and Kristi Coats as the only LSU women golfers to win back-to-back titles and becomes the sixth Lady Tiger ever to win multiple tournaments.
“I can’t tell you how pleasing it was to watch Meredith go out and win her second straight collegiate event,” said LSU head coach Karen Bahnsen.
As a team, the Lady Tigers finished with a score of 85-over par 925.
The host Lady Gators won the tournament while posting a 60-over par 600, South Carolina was second with a final score of 909 and the Georgia Lady Bulldogs rounded out the top three finishing with a 910.
“We had some good things and some shaky moments,” Bahnsen said. “But we know what we need to work on and have a few weeks to get ready for our next event.”
The Lady Tigers also received strong showings from senior Lindy Hitdlebaugh, who finished 17th with a 21-over par 231, and freshman Brooke Shelton, who shot a 23-over par 233 to tie for 20th.
LSU will return to action March 15-17 at the South Carolina Lady Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
