The Christmas tree in front of the Memorial Tower is lit and decorated, but this year no one was there to witness the event.
The University canceled its annual Candlelight Celebration Tuesday because of poor weather conditions and lighting problems.
Many students unaware of the cancellation went to the Memorial Tower hoping to see the lighting of the Giving Tree and the Hanukkah menorah.
Randy Gurie, director of special events at Student Life and Academic Services, said because the University scheduled the event so close to dead week it will not be rescheduled.
Gurie apologized for the cancellation and said although no official ceremony took place, the Christmas tree is lit.
“I know people look forward to the tree lighting ceremony, and I hope people will walk by and enjoy it,” Gurie said.
He said the rains Tuesday were upsetting because many people put in much time preparing for the event.
The 41-foot Norzman Fir arrived on campus Nov. 21 from Mossy Rock, Wash.
The tree is decorated with about 7,000 lights and more than 200 ornaments, Gurie said.
Students can see the Christmas tree until workers take it down in the beginning of January.
