The No. 20 LSU men’s tennis team rallied from a 3-1 deficit Saturday to upend No. 16 Texas.
After losing the doubles point to start the match, the Tigers won four of the six singles matches to claim the 4-3 victory.
Peter Richman, ranked No. 51 among singles players in the country, clinched the match for the Tigers with a 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory over No. 28 Jean Simon of Texas on court No. 1.
“He’s had a tough little run,” said men’s tennis head coach Jeff Brown about Richman. “We just told him to be brave, go for your shots and enjoy it. And in between shaking out there, I think he did fine.”
In the other singles matches, Bryan Fisher defeated Antonio Ruiz 6-1, 6-2. Jason Hazley upset No. 42 Jose Zarhi, 7-6, 6-2, and Sebastian Rutka handled Pete Stroer, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Sunday, the women’s tennis team cruised to a 5-2 victory over No. 31 Ohio St.
The Lady Tigers started the day clinching the doubles point against the Buckeyes. Camila Caliari clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4, victory against OSU’s Lindsey Adams.
“I thought we fought really hard today,” said women’s tennis head coach Tony Minnis. “I thought in the doubles we played solid; singles I think we played OK. I’m really proud of the effort.”
Amanda Mang returned to the starting singles lineup and recorded a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Lindsay Williams. Also Marina Chiarelli defeated Jackie Leskovar, 6-2, 6-2, and Daysi Espinal toppled Emily DeCamilla 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Both Tiger tennis teams return to Southeastern Conference action next weekend against Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
