The LSU women’s tennis team fell to Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., Wednesday, 5-2, to halt a three-game winning streak.
The Lady Tigers (11-11, 3-7 Southeastern Conference) won the doubles point to start the match. No. 43 Rocio Fantilli and Lauren Seaman, who are ranked for the first time this season, defeated Missy Wright and Lara Burgarello, 8-5.
Jessica Ferguson and teammate Marina Chiarelli upended Shawna Zuccarini and Melissa Woods, 9-7.
LSU only mustered one singles victory the remainder of the match. Chiarelli beat Melissa Igbal, 3-6, 7-5, 3-0.
“We played really well,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “We ended up having to play indoors, and I thought we played aggressively. We still feel pretty good about ourselves.”
The victory was Purdue’s first ever against LSU and its first against an SEC opponent since 1998. The Lady Tigers lead the overall series, 4-1.
In other news, the Lady Tigers jumped 13 spots to No. 40 nationally following last weekend’s sweep of Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
LSU completes the regular season Sunday, as the Lady Tigers travel to battle SEC foe Arkansas.
“We played hard [against Purdue],” Minnis said. “We’ve just got to finish the season strong and hopefully get ready for the NCAA Tournament.”
