The LSU women’s tennis team tries to stop the bleeding today against No. 25 Tulane in New Orleans at 5 p.m.
The Lady Tigers (8-10, 1-7 Southeastern Conference) have lost seven of their last eight games. The last victory for LSU came against No. 31 Ohio State on March 23.
Tulane (13-2) boasts the No. 44 singles player in the country, freshman Jenny Kuhn. Kuhn is 22-4 in singles play on the season and 24-6 in doubles matches. Tulane has won five of its last six games.
Last weekend the Lady Tigers failed to earn a point against both Vanderbilt and Kentucky, getting blanked 7-0 in both contests.
“We fought really hard this past weekend,” said women’s tennis head coach Tony Minnis. “I’m really pleased with the progress of these kids.”
The best performance of the weekend came via the doubles team of Rocio Fantilli and Lauren Seaman, who defeated Vanderbilt’s No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos.
“We’re just in a situation where I keep telling them that if you keep fighting and keep competing, good things will happen,” Minnis said. “This whole season, they’ve been losing real close matches, but they kept a good attitude and kept fighting.”
Minnis attributes the tough going for the Lady Tigers to the level of competition LSU is facing this season.
“They’re going against some of the toughest teams in the country day in and day out,” Minnis said. “Our goal in our minds is to have a shot to make the [NCAA] tournament. We’re working toward that, and we’re aiming toward that.”
