The Residence Hall Association held its final meeting of the semester Wednesday to update members on the RHA elections controversy.
After the revote April 25 in Herget Hall and the Horseshoe, the newly calculated results showed presidential and vice presidential candidates Nathan Boudreaux and Doug Fields received 430 votes.
Candidates Chris Broussard and Lauren Fontenot received 367 votes.
But an appeal filed Tuesday said the Boudreaux/Fields ticket violated guidelines.
According to the election guidelines, “during balloting hours, only four total campaigners at any time may actively campaign for their ticket anywhere across campus.”
Elections Commissioner Adam French said during the April 25 election, an Elections Commission member monitored elections procedures.
The member reported the Boudreaux/Fields ticket had six campaigners in front of Herget Hall and the Horseshoe, French said.
French said the commission voted to disqualify Boudreaux and Fields from the election based on the appeal.
Current RHA President Michael Krom addressed RHA members saying the Executive Board was tired of hearing appeals and planned to hold a hearing with all parties involved in the controversy later Wednesday night.
Candidates and those who filed appeals met with the Executive Board to discuss the problem.
“We want to sort everything out so we can make a very fair, educated decision,” Krom said.
RHA usually swears in the new president and vice president during the end of the semester banquet, which will be held this semester on May 5.
Krom said to avoid more controversy, the new president and vice president will not be sworn in.
The Executive Board plans to make the final decision sometime after the banquet next week, Krom said.
“We’ve been trying to rush decisions but this is a decision that should not be rushed,” Krom said. “We don’t want to make a decision on a timeline.”
Krom said it was upsetting to end the semester on a bad note.
In other decisions, RHA members voted to donate money left in the budget at the end of the semester to support construction of the University’s Child Care facility.
Members decided the donation would be between $500 and $1000.
