For the final time this season, the men’s tennis team will put its streak of 75-consecutive victories against in-state opponents on the line.
The Tigers host the University of Southern Mississippi and Southeastern Louisiana University at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium starting at 1 p.m this Sunday.
Last weekend, the men’s team improved to 4-0 on the season with a pair of convincing victories versus non-conference opponents. The Tigers defeated the University of Texas-San Antonio 6-1 in the first match of the day.
Later the Tigers extended their winning streak versus in-state opponents to 75 matches with a dominating 6-0 victory against cross town rival Southern University. It was the second time in as many weeks that the Tigers have beaten the Jaguars.
Sophomore Jason Hazley improved to 11-7 in singles matches on the season with a pair of victories last week. Freshman Paul White, from Lake Charles, also picked up a couple of singles victories.
Head coach Jeff Brown said he knows how important it is to win home matches prior to starting conference play.
“We just need to keep going and continue to look for some more positive progress,” he said. “We have one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season, and every win that we get is going to be a huge boost for us.”
On the women’s side, the Lady Tiger tennis team will travel to Houston this weekend to take on the Houston Lady Cougars. The match is set to begin Saturday at 11 a.m.
Last Saturday, the Lady Tigers picked up a couple of victories against in-state opponents Southern and the University of Louisiana Monroe. On Sunday, the Lady Tigers fell to Florida State 4-3 for the second-consecutive year.
Head coach Tony Minnis has the Lady Tigers off to a 4-1 start this season.
“The season is still very young and we have a lot of maturing to do,” he said. “Right now we just need to concentrate on playing one match at a time, and that is Houston on Saturday.”
